Learning by making videos
Ricardo Makes Videos is where I document the ways I’m finding to make content: the equipment I use, the styles I try, and the ideas I turn into videos.
The biggest skill I’m trying to develop is getting from an idea to a video I can post in as little time as possible. Thinking of something, turning on the camera, communicating it as coherently as I can, and getting it out there.
I appreciate how much structure, planning, and scripting can help. I also want to get good at recording an idea while I actually want to talk about it.
The experiment I’m enjoying
Recently, that’s been making website teardown videos for Websites by Ricardo, then recording the less planned, unscripted documentation of those attempts.
I haven’t posted those behind-the-scenes recordings yet. I have recorded them, though, and I’ve really enjoyed being able to turn on a camera and talk about what I’m working on.
The Websites by Ricardo videos have a lead-generation purpose, so structure matters there. This channel gives me somewhere to explore the process of making them, including the things I’m still figuring out.
How the channels fit together
I started separate channels so each interest has its own area to grow. Ricardo Moves is about fitness. Websites by Ricardo is about my website work. Ricardo Makes Videos is about making content.
My Ricardo Calcina YouTube channel gives me more freedom again. I read a lot, make art, journal, and enjoy watching and discussing series. I originally thought about creating more pages for those interests, perhaps a book club, but they don’t all need their own channel straight away.
For now, I can put those ideas under my own name. If something sticks and builds enough momentum, I can spin it off into a series or a channel of its own.
Where this could go
Ricardo Makes Videos currently has a TikTok account. I’d like to add Instagram and YouTube over time.
Eventually, I’d like this work to lead to brand deals, sponsored content, UGC, or a mixture of those. For now, I’m developing the skill of turning ideas into things I actually share. This site gives the project a home while it grows.
